John Powell

John H. Powell, 61, Burlington, formerly of Galesburg, Illinois, and Dallas City, Illinois, made his final cast on Sept. 17, 2016. He was an avid fisherman, competing in and winning many bass fishing tournaments.
John was born in Warsaw, New York, on Oct. 21, 1954, to Jimmie and Margaret Powell. He was reared and educated in Galesburg, Illinois, graduating from Galesburg High School in 1973. he retired after 39 years from BNSF Railway as a machine operator. John was previously married to Kathy Daggs and later married Mona (Mimi) Zimmerman on May 22, 2010.
Surviving are his mother, Margaret of Galesburg, Illinois; his wife, Mona of Burlington; sons Jason Powell of Vandalia, Missouri, and Jacob Zimmerman of Burlington; daughter Charlotte (Chris) Hessley of Kahoka, Missouri; granddaughter CaLea Powell of Kahoka, Missouri; one brother, Jim (Lynn) Powell of Galesburg, Illinois; one sister, Mary Ann (George) Erickson of Williamsfield, Illinois; one brother-in-law, Roger Blevins of Galesburg, Illinois; two nephews; three nieces; seven great-nephews; six great-nieces, and one great-great-nephew. He was preceded in death by his father, Jimmie Powell, and sister, Alice Blevins.
A celebration of life service will be at noon Oct. 23 at Port of Burlington.
A memorial fund has been established for his granddaughter's education.
