Willie Mims

Willie Mims

Willie Clyde Mims, of Iowa City, passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2015, at home.
He was born Jan. 20, 1954, in Galesburg, Illinois, to Clyde and Bernetta Mims. He attended Galesburg High School before continuing his education at Indian Hills Community College and then at the University of Iowa. He was an avid sports fan, who played baseball while at the University of Iowa and was selected to the Big Ten All Conference team as a senior.
Willie was a devoted father and family man. He was known for his boisterous manner, for his words of wisdom and for being the life of the party. Willie was an unselfish man who showed his love for his family in countless ways. This was most apparent in the open door policy he had for family. If you were in need of a few dollars, someone to talk to, or a place to stay, then the door was always open. Willie was always helping family and friends cope with the trials and tribulations of life in his own unique way.
Willie was well loved in his community. The outpouring of love and support following his passing was tremendous. Willie had an ability to say the right thing to the right person that would make a profound difference on their lives and last with them for decades. The number of stories and heartfelt well wishes that came across on the internet after his passing made it evident that many people were touched by Willie's life and the things that he shared with anyone he came across.
Willie is survived by his "wife" Kelly of Iowa City, Iowa: his children, Jamie Mims of Iowa City, Iowa, his son, Michael Mims of Iowa City, Iowa, his daughter, Gwendolyn Mims of Iowa City, Iowa; his mother, Bernetta Mims of Galesburg, Illinois; his brothers, Fred Mims and wife Susan of Iowa City, Iowa, Nathaniel Mims and wife Mary of Galesburg, Illinois, and Bobby Mims of Kansas City, Missouri. He has 11 nieces and nephews as well as many cousins. Willie was preceded in death by his father, Clyde Mims; his sister, Ruth Mims; and brother, Terry Mims.
Service will be held on Friday, July 3, 2015, at Second Baptist Church, 305 S. Cherry St. in Galesburg. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. with the service following right after. The Rev. John H. Mims officiating.
