Dr. R. Craig McKenna, 59, of Chicago, Ill. died at 11:45 p.m. July 15, 2014 in Advocate Masonic Medical Center in Chicago.
He was the son of Don and Joan Cowman. He was born in Galesburg, Ill. on February 16, 1955 to Robert and Joan Folkenroth McKenna.
He is survived by his parents, Don and Joan Cowman of Galesburg; his sister, April (Gil) Douglas of Burlington, Iowa; his nephew, Gilbert (Rachel) Douglas III of Burlington, Iowa; his niece, Rachael Douglas of Santa Barbara, Calif.; his grandmother, Rosemary Cowman; aunts, uncles, many cousins and special friends, Carl (Angie) Tanzillo. He is preceded in death by his father, Robert McKenna; his brother, Todd Cowman; grandparents, Charles and Viola Folkenroth; grandfather LaVerne Cowman and grandparents, George and Della McKenna.
Craig graduated from Galesburg High School, where he played on the Galesburg Silver Streak basketball team and held several track records. He graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University, University of Illinois Medical School and Northwestern Medical School. Before going into private practice, he was employed by the West Side Veterans Administration in Chicago, where he was involved with direct patient care and research with journal publications. During his career he was a professor at Northwestern University. He was currently in private practice of psychiatry in Chicago.
He enjoyed playing the piano, organ and listening to music. He appreciated the arts, nature and was an avid reader.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2014 at First Lutheran Church, Galesburg. Rev. Pamela Marolla will officiate. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
